Bariatric surgery

Bariatric surgery

Bariatric surgery is the only treatment modality that offers weight loss and long-lasting weight maintenance.  It is also a new treatment option for patients with type 2 Diabetes with remission and improvement rates of 85% and 15%, respectively.

There are 2 types of interventions

  1. Gastric bypass

It is a surgery that consists in the creation of a small bag out of the stomach to restrict the intake of food.  This reduces the absorption of nutrients and calories. It is the most commonly performed surgery in Spain with a weight loss of 65-75% at 5 years.

  1. Gastric sleeve

It is a procedure that is performed via laparoscopy and consists of decreasing the capacity of the stomach by using a stapling device to create a tubular structure out of the stomach. The weight loss is similar to that of the gastric bypass. It is an irreversible surgery.
